That because of his mistake on the stand,the people in the town have less respect for him and what he has done. That because he is african american they wont belive him expecially after he said that he felt bad for Maella, which in his form as an african american is very wrong to say to a white girl!

I think the mistake on the stand shows that the town is racist. Even though he was innocent because of what he said the jury made him guilty .
